Did
you know that the area around Fountain Hills, Rio Verde, Tonto
Verde and the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation teems with history
and adventure.
Some
15 years ago, a group of culturally - minded Fountain Hills residents
formed a Historical Society which has become known for its dinners,
social gatherings, trips and interesting projects appealing to
people of various cultural interests.
In
2003, the Historical Society opened its " crown jewel,"
a museum themed around the history of the Verde River and the
civilizations it made possible. This " River of Time Museum
" was funded jointly by the town and private contributions.
It was built as a part of the new Community Center complex.

A land of the
ages ... nurtured by the Verde River ...
- Prehistoric
animals and humans once roamed here - an ancient Hohokam Indian
Community called Azatlan was situated between Fountain Hills and
Rio Verde.
- The mountain
men and gold seekers came - and the U.S. Cavalry. Ranchers and
farmers followed, with farmers forming a settlement about 25 miles
away on the Salt River which they named "Phoenix."
- Dams were
built to tame the Salt and Verde Rivers, while the Yavapai Indians
worked to establish their new community on the site of the former
Fort McDowell army Post.
- Ranchers,
farmers and Native Americans lived in harmony on the land. In
the late 1960's, entrepreneurs created the new communities of
Fountain Hills and Rio Verde.
